15 tools in this guide
Compare them side by sideThis guide is for researchers who want an outside read of a manuscript before submission, and for editors who triage manuscripts. It covers fifteen tools.
Four questions separate them. Does the tool read the whole paper? Does its score mean the same thing in every field? Does it check its own findings? Can you ask it about the result?

Explore Science scores the full paper on Calibre: 0 to 100 across eight categories, on one rubric for any field. Five frontier models and our in-house Explorer One read the paper and check each other's findings. It tests novelty against the live literature, verifies each reference to a DOI and scores each revision against the last. Rosa, the co-scientist chat, answers with your paper and its review in view.
The same engine runs the lab's own autonomous research (Closing the Empirical Loop, Advanced Science, 2026). A full review takes about an hour, often more. We email you when it is ready.
It is free to start. One review costs $50. Plans cost $100 or $200 a month, or $80 or $160 a month billed annually.
Where others win: Several tools return a review in minutes, and PeerGenius, Reviewer3 and Manusights cost less per paper. The Stanford Agentic Reviewer and QED Science are free. For English editing, journal rules or a named human expert, see the writing checkers and Editage below.
Choose it when you want one score that holds across fields and drafts, from models that check each other, and a co-scientist to ask about it.
Reviewer3
- Type
- Full-paper reviewers
- Price
- $19 a review, $29 a month
Reviewer3 checks papers and grants for study design, statistics and reproducibility. Its Reference Check looks for each citation in OpenAlex and Crossref and flags hallucinated and retracted references. It gives no paper score, and it states that it cannot judge novelty. The publisher and Teams plans add integrity checks. A review costs $19, or $29 a month for unlimited reviews.
Choose it when you want a fast, low-cost technical screen with a reference check and will judge novelty yourself.
PeerGenius
- Type
- Full-paper reviewers
- Price
- $6.36 to $9.40 (3,500 words)
PeerGenius uses seven AI reviewers and returns in five to fifteen minutes. Each reviewer scores the paper 0 to 100, and the Full panel adds a decision letter. It parses references, but its pages describe no verification. A published evaluation on five BMJ manuscripts rated its reviews 8.86, against 7.86 for human reviews. A 3,500-word article costs $6.36 for the Core panel and $9.40 for the Full panel.
Choose it when you want several reviewer viewpoints and a decision letter in minutes for a few dollars.
Manusights
- Type
- Full-paper reviewers
- Price
- Free scan, from $39
Manusights offers a free readiness scan, a Full Review from $39 and a $99 Dossier. The Full Review reads each figure and scores six sections from 1 to 5. It verifies citations against six databases, flags citations that do not support their claims and screens for retractions. The Dossier adds an AI-content scan. A 60-day money-back guarantee covers the Full Review. Its pages describe no chat.
Choose it when you want a low-cost full review with claim-level citation checks and a refund if it finds little.
QED Science
- Type
- Full-paper reviewers
- Price
- Free for academics
QED Science breaks a life-sciences paper into its core claims and returns a review. Its QED Score ranks the paper as a percentile against its field. QED assumes the data are genuine. Its pages describe no reference verification, and researchers get no chat. bioRxiv authors can send a preprint to it from the Author Area. It is free for researchers with an institutional email.
Choose it when you work in the life sciences, have an academic email and want a claim-by-claim read ranked against your field at no cost.
The Stanford Agentic Reviewer is free and needs only an email address. It reads the first 15 pages of English-language papers. It scores papers 1 to 10 only for ICLR. On 147 ICLR 2025 submissions, its scores correlated with human reviewers at 0.42, against 0.41 between two humans. The published pipeline has no citation check and no follow-up channel.
Choose it when you have a machine-learning paper in English and want a free outside read.
Thesify gives students and researchers rubric-based, coaching-style feedback. It scores each rubric separately and gives no overall score. Its own guide says that it is not a citation checker and does not replace plagiarism screening. Theo, its chat, works from your draft. One review costs €14.95.
Choose it when you are a student or early-career researcher and want coaching on argument and evidence while you write.
Research assistants with a review feature
These tools do many research tasks. A review is one of them.
SciSpace
- Type
- Research assistants with a review feature
- Price
- From $12 a month (annual)
SciSpace is a research copilot. Its peer review agent uses three reviewers who score the paper out of 10, with a novelty check. Its Reference Checker agent validates DOIs. It also searches the literature, has systematic-review agents and lets you chat with your PDFs. Premium costs $12 a month billed annually ($20 monthly).
Choose it when you want literature search, systematic-review tools and a quick review agent in one subscription.
ChatGPT
- Type
- Research assistants with a review feature
- Price
- Free, $8 to $500 a month
ChatGPT is a general assistant that reviews a paper on request, usually in seconds. Consensus and Scite work as apps inside it, and Scite needs its own subscription. Personal plans train on your chats unless you disable this in Data Controls. Plans go from Free and Go ($8 a month) to Pro ($500 a month).
Choose it when you want a fast general assistant for questions about a draft and will check its references yourself.
Claude Science
- Type
- Research assistants with a review feature
- Price
- Free, Pro $17 a month (annual)
Claude Science is a desktop workbench for data analysis. A reviewer agent flags incorrect citations and figures that do not match their code, but only in the work that Claude produced. Its pages describe no manuscript score. Pro costs $17 a month billed annually ($20 monthly).
Choose it when you need to run and check the analysis behind the paper, rather than review the finished manuscript.
Writing and compliance checkers
These tools improve the language or check submission rules. They do not assess the science.
Paperpal
- Type
- Writing and compliance checkers
- Price
- Free, Prime $12 a month (annual)
Paperpal edits academic writing in real time and does more than 30 submission checks. On the Prime plan, its Reference Checker checks for retractions, dead links and hallucinated references. It also has a plagiarism check and an AI-text detector. It publishes no score. Chat PDF answers questions on your PDFs. Prime costs $12 a month billed annually ($25 monthly), and a free tier has caps.
Choose it when English is your second language and you want editing, reference checks and plagiarism screening in one subscription.
Trinka
- Type
- Writing and compliance checkers
- Price
- Free, Premium $48 a year
Trinka corrects academic and technical writing and does more than 25 submission checks. Its Citation Checker validates references against Crossref and flags retracted and predatory citations. It has a plagiarism check and an AI detector. Proofread File returns a language quality score. Trinka also runs on premises. The free plan gives 5,000 words a month, and Premium costs $48 a year.
Choose it when you want low-cost language correction and submission checks, or an on-premises deployment.
Writefull
- Type
- Writing and compliance checkers
- Price
- Free quota, Premium $150

Cite flags sentences that need a citation, but it does not check your references. Publishers use its API to score language quality. The free plan has a daily quota, and Premium costs $150.
Choose it when you write in Word or Overleaf and want language editing from a model trained on published papers.
Penelope
- Type
- Writing and compliance checkers
- Price
- Free where a journal sponsors it
Penelope checks a Word manuscript against a journal's requirements. It matches citations to the reference list and checks declarations and trial registration IDs. Each check passes or fails, and it does not check study design or inference. It is free to authors where a journal carries it. Journal plans start at £750.
Choose it when your target journal offers it, or you manage a journal and want to check submissions against your rules.
Human review service
Editage
- Type
- Human review service
- Price
- $200 a review
